Collagù and the spectacle of nature: its ancient "ciglioni"

Collagù, solitary and silent, is a pointed hill on which the spectacle of the unparalleled beauty of nature which touches the heart and soul of visitors.

It is possibly among the most characteristic, panoramic scenery of the Prosecco Superiore region; the tangible proof of the naturalistic value of our hills. At the top of the Collagù hill, reachable by following the naturalistic Vedette path, you can admire the steep and abrupt heights interspersed with little parallel valleys covered with vines, to which man has adapted by modelling the steep slopes and perfecting agricultural techniques.

The spectacle of nature in Collagù culminates in the “ciglioni”, a type of terracing that uses the grassed land instead of stones to make the terraces on which the vines are grown, solid and stable. This adaptive practice on steep slopes originated in the 16th century. The work of thousands of small farmers has made it possible to create over time a varied landscape called “mosaic” consisting of small fragmented but connected plots, interspersed with woods to protect the ecosystem. Just below the top of this pointed hill stands the Sanctuary of Collagù, built on the ruins of a Roman altar and for centuries a destination for pilgrims from the valley who venerated the “Madonna dei Dolori”. It was abandoned between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and rebuilt in the 1930s by the Bottari de Castello family in a sober and elegant Romanesque style.
