Biodiversity in the vineyard: a heritage to protect and preserve

Biodiversity is an invaluable asset for the ecosystem, and vineyards are no exception!

Preserving biodiversity within the vineyard is essential for ensuring sustainability, soil health, and wine quality. It has always been one of our core values.
We have long adhered to the SQNPI (National Quality System for Integrated Production), a certification scheme that promotes agricultural products grown in accordance with regional integrated production standards.

In other words, we are committed to using every available means of cultivation and crop protection, while respecting ecological, economic, and toxicological principles.

What is biodiversity?
Biodiversity refers to the variety of life within a given ecosystem, including plants, animals, fungi, and microorganisms.

A wide range of plant and animal species improves soil structure and fertility. The diverse root systems help prevent erosion, while organisms like earthworms and mycorrhizae enhance aeration and nutrient availability.

Greater biodiversity also helps control harmful pests. Natural predators such as birds and beneficial insects can reduce pest populations, lowering the need for pesticides.

In addition, more diverse ecosystems tend to be more resilient to climate change. Different species respond differently to environmental stress, allowing the vineyard to better adapt to changing conditions.

From a quality standpoint, a healthy, biodiverse vineyard can positively influence grape quality  and, in turn, the wine. Biodiversity plays a role in shaping a unique terroir, giving the wine distinctive and highly appreciated characteristics.

Which practices support vineyard biodiversity?

Green manure and cover cropping: Planting cover crops such as legumes and grasses between vineyard rows improves soil fertility, prevents erosion, and promotes biodiversity.

Integration of native species: Encouraging the growth of native plants around the vineyard provides habitat for local wildlife and supports ecological balance.

Reducing pesticide use: Introducing beneficial insects or pheromone traps helps control pests without harming other species.

Creating natural oases: Dedicating areas within or around the vineyard to woods, hedgerows, or wetlands increases available habitats and supports greater species variety.

Our Commitment
Protecting and promoting biodiversity in the vineyard is not only an ethical choice, it’s a smart, forward-thinking strategy for ensuring long-term sustainability and wine quality.

Investing in farming practices that enhance biodiversity means caring for the land, its future, and the gifts it offers us. In a world facing increasing environmental challenges, biodiversity is a vital, irreplaceable resource for our vineyards and for the entire planet.
